Response to Hate

You may have seen members of Westboro Baptist Church on the news: protesting with their signs and shouting some of the most hateful things you’ve ever heard at military funerals, gay weddings, and anything with a connection to Obama.
Last week WBC found a new target to lash out at in the “nerds†attending Comic-Con in San Diego. They held signs that read: “God Hates Nerds†and shouted,
“The destruction of this is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatryâ€
I encountered WBC while living in Virginia as they protested the funeral of Jerry Falwell. I took the opportunity to have a conversation with a couple of the protesters. It went nowhere fast.
Every time I see Westboro Baptist in the media I cringe. I’ve written 5 or 6 posts responding to WBC, none of which have seen the light of day because each one seems to crawl down to their level. I was even invited to have a conversation about it with the folks at Irreverent Podcast and had to ask them to edit out some of what I said because I wanted to respond in love rather than anger.
So the questions remains, how should I respond? I saw this video a few weeks ago and think it’s brilliant.
How will you respond to the hate you encounter?
